Alfred Hook was born at Paddington. He was a compositor. He enlisted on 23 August 1915 aged 22, giving as next of kin, his mother at 40 Pine Street, Manly.

He embarked on 20 December 1915. He served in France with the 5th and 14th Machine Gun Companies. He was hospitalised with shellshock on 10 March 1917, and re-admitted in October 1917 after three weeks in France, unable to be within earshot of bombs.

He was returned to Australia with neurasthenia on 8 November 1918, and discharged on 7 June 1919.
