Alfred Hughes was born at Manly and was a baker. He enlisted on 31 October 1914 giving as next of kin his mother of 38 Denison Street, and embarked on 22 December 1914.

He served with the 13th Battalion. He was diagnosed with a dilated heart, and spent several spells in hospital, including for VD.

He was returned to Australia on the Suffolk on 12 April 1919.
