Fred Humphries was born at Battisford, near Bath, England in 1894. He was a baker and salesman. He enlisted on 11 September 1916 giving his next of kin as his wife Laurel Humphries at Woodland Street, Balgowlah.

He embarked on 11 September 1916, and served with the 2nd AASC.

He returned to Australia on the Suevic on 13 July 1919.
