Ernest Ingram was born in Hackney, London in 1894. He was a jockey. He enlisted on 23 August 1915. He served in the Middle East with the 6th Light Horse.

He was disciplined for sleeping on guard duty in March 1916. He contracted VD on several occasions. He was captured and held as prisoner of war in a Turkish camp until the end of the war.

He contracted malaria there. Following his repatriation in November 1918, further disciplinary action was taken against him and he was sentenced to 90 days’ field punishment no 2.

He returned to Australia on the Dunluce Castleon 17 July 1919.
