William Ingram was born at Manly on 4 February 1900. He was a plumber with R S Dethick of Manly. His mother lived at 96 Whistler Street. He was the brother of Percy Ingram, who also served.

William enlisted on 8 May 1918 and embarked on the Port Darwin on 14 September 1918.

He served in Egypt with the 2nd Signal Squadron, and returned to Australia on 31 May 1919.
