William Johnston was born at Parramatta in 1898. He was a picture framer. He enlisted on 27 November 1916, giving as next of kin his father frank at Condamine Street, Manly Vale.

He embarked on 24 January 1917 and served with the 1st Battalion Pioneers. He was wounded in action on 6 November 1917 in France. He was wounded again the following year in France on 11 August, in the head, thigh, leg and foot.

He returned to Australia on the Morvadaon 4 January 1919.
