Charles Jones was born at Newtown in 1888. He was a general labourer. He enlisted on 13 September 1915, giving as next of kin his mother Annie, of Beach House, Freshwater.

He embarked on the Warilda on 22 May 1916. He served as a Gunner with the 13th, 21st and 1stFAB. He was wounded in action in April 1917 but remained at his post. On 21 July 1917 he was severely gassed at Ypres. He was sent home to convalesce on the Port Lyttleton on 19 October 1917, and was discharged from duty on 22 January 1918.
