William S Kay was born at Granville c1894. He was a law clerk. He enlisted on 2 August 1915, giving as next of kin his father William, at 56 Raglan Street, Manly.

He embarked on the Ballarat on 16 February 1916, and served first with the 13th Battalion, then with the 54thBattalion. He was promoted to Corporal in France on 11 January 1917.

He was seriously wounded in the head and face on 15 May 1917, and hospitalised in England for treatment.

He was returned to Australia on the Persic on 21 December 1917, and discharged from military service on 10 August 1918.
