Cyril Kidman was born at Petersham in 1895 but gave his age as 21 when he enlisted in September 1914. He attended Petersham Superior Public School and Fort Street School. He was a stock clerk with Warden Harry Graves Ltd prior to enlisting.

Mr Kidman was a member of North Steyne SLSC and had earned the SLA bronze medallion and silver medal for life-saving.
