Herbert Langford was born at Islington, London in 1890. He was a motor engineer with Tooth’s Brewery in Sydney prior to enlistment on 16 September 1914. He married after enlistment, and his wife Elsie lived at 46 Pacific Parade, Manly.

He embarked on the Ceramicfrom Melbourne on 22 December 1914. He served as a Driver, and was promoted to Lance-Corporal on 29 June 1915, then was transferred to be an Artificer, but went absent without leave some time in 1916.

He was apprehended by the Provost Corps on 25 October 1918 in the uniform of the Royal Navy, where he had been serving as Artificer Ford. He was sentenced to pay stoppages, and returned to Australia on the Derbyshirein 1919.
