James Lister was born at Hay, NSW in 1898. He was a clerk. He enlisted on 24 April 1917, giving as next of kin his father, Walter Proctor Lister of 90 Addison Road, Manly.

He embarked on 3 September 1917 on the Kyarra. He served with the 2nd Light Horse in the Middle East, later transferring to the 6th Light Horse. He was hospitalised, first with pyrexia, and in June 1918 he was hospitalised with malaria.

He returned to Australia on 28 June 1919.
