Arthur Long was born at Normanton, Queensland in 1891. He was a commercial traveller and grocer prior to enlisting. He enlisted on 30 May 1915, giving his father as next of kin, although a woman at Pittwater Road, Manly was drawing his pay.

He embarked on the Runicon 9 August 1915. He was hospitalised on several occasions with influenza, malaria, venereal disease and bronchitis. He served in Egypt and then in France.

He was awarded the Military Medal in France on 25 October 1916 (gazetted 8 December 1916). He was promoted to Lance-Corporal on 7 November 1916.

He was invalided home to Australia with persistent bronchitis and shellshock, returning on the Kanownaon 16 July 1917. After discharge he resided at Resthaven, Sydney Road, Manly. He died in 1934.
