Clarence Loten was born at Taree, NSW in 1893. He was a clerk prior to enlisting. He enlisted on 8 March 1915, giving his sister at Stanmore as his next of kin. He embarked on the Ceramic on 25 June 1915.

He was hospitalised from Gallipoli. He was promoted to Sergeant on 12 October 1915, CSM on 2 September 1916, 2nd Lieutenant on 4 October 1916 and Lieutenant on 8 May 1917. He was wounded in the head on 18 November 1916 and wounded in the elbow and buttocks on 31 May 1917.

He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal on 1 January 1917 (gazetted 29 December 1916) for capturing several enemy prisoners. He was invalided home with a paralysed arm on 12 March 1918 and discharged from service.
