Alfred Love was born at Walcha in 1886. He was a farmer, and a widower with one child. He enlisted on 7 November 1914, giving his mother as next of kin, living in Manly.

He served at Gallipoli as a Driver where he was wounded on 4 December 1915. He was promoted to Corporal on 27 January 1916 and Sergeant on 2 February 1918. He was hospitalised with venereal disease for 107 days in 1917.

His brothers Clifford and Colin died in the war, and his mother wrote to ask for his return to Australia. He was discharged from service as a result of her letter and returned to Australia on the Durham Castle on 10 March 1918.
