John Lowick was born at Sydney in 1892. He was a clerk prior to enlisting. He enlisted on 8 February 1915 giving his mother, living at Wakerfield Street, North Manly, as next of kin.

He embarked on the Shropshireon 17 March 1915, and served as a Bugler with the 13th Battalion. He was at Gallipoli from May to December 1915. He was transferred to the 45th Battalion. He was awarded the Military Medal on 20 November 1917. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 1 August 1918 and Lieutenant on 1 December 1918.

He returned to Australia on the Armaghon 3 April 1919. In 1967 he was living at Gunnedah. He is pictured on p13 of Heroes of the Surf, aged 23.
