Herb Luker was born at Granville in 1892. He was a plumber with Robert Wall and Son prior to enlisting. He enlisted on 5 May 1915, giving his father Alfred Luker of Whistler Street as next of kin.

He served with the 1st DAC before being transferred to the 1st Field Artillery as a Driver. He was hospitalised on two occasions with venereal disease, on 4 February 1916 and 29 February 1917. In october1917 he was wounded in action in the buttocks. In March 1918 he transferred to the AFC and served as 2nd Air Mechanic then Air Mechanic.

He returned to Australia on the Kaiser-i-Hind on 6 May 1919.
