Arthur McCubbin junior, an engineer, was married to Mary. They had children Margaret, born 1884, at Glebe, and David, born 1890, at Balmain; Arthur junior’s birth is not listed, but he appears to have been older than his brother David. Arthur junior was a ship’s engineer. In 1905 he was an engineer for the North Coast Steam Navigation Company on the Clarence River [1]. He was engineer on the ship Begawhen it foundered on the south coast in 1908, and gave evidence at the enquiry [2].

In 1914 he was engineer on a ship at New Zealand when war was declared. He immediately joined up with the 1st Otago Infantry Battalion. He was at Gallipoli at the evacuation, then served in Egypt. He transferred to the Royal Navy, and was on a destroyer at Jutland.3 He served on a mine-sweeper and attained the rank of senior lieutenant-engineer. After the war he had a business in Scotland before returning to Australia in mid-1922.

He played first grade rugby for Manly and represented the Sydney metropolis. After the war he captained the Manly Returned Soldiers’ Cricket Club [4].

He died on 19 December 1924. He was 37 and unmarried. His brother David was living in Johannesburg, and his sisters were Mrs F Young of Cheltenham and Mrs J H Smart. Lt A McCubbin is listed on the Uniting Church Roll of Honour for WWI and the Manly Village School Roll of Honour.
