Maxwell Manfred was born at Goulburn in 1893 and was a woolclasser. He enlisted on 18 February 1915, and embarked on 31 May 1915. He served with the 5th Field Ambulance at Gallipoli and then in France.

He was hospitalised with pneumonia and appendicitis.

He returned to Australia on 6 September 1919. His father lived at Goulburn, but the family had ties to Manly.
