Patrick Matterson was born at Adelong, NSW in 1885. He was a horseman prior to enlisting. His mother lived at Belgrave Street, Manly. He enlisted on 4 March 1915 and embarked on the Themistocles on 12 May 1915.

His war service record is sketchy, but indicates that he had several spells in hospital with rheumatism, and that he suffered from a bomb wound to his leg.

He was sent home to Australia and discharged from service on 18 October 1916.
