James May was born near Londonderry, Ireland and was a tram conductor prior to enlisting. He enlisted on 24 August 1914 and embarked on the Euripides on 19 October 1914 with the 1st Field Ambulance.

He served at Gallipoli and was hospitalised. He was transferred to the AA Postal Corps in March 1916 and was admitted to hospital on several more occasions with general debility.

He was returned to Australia for discharged on the Leicestershireon 9 December 1918.
