Alfred McCullough was born at Lewisham, Sydney in 1895. He was a motor mechanic. He enlisted on 9 May 1917, giving his father at Daintrey Street, Manly as next of kin.

He served with the 7th Light Horse then 1st Light Horse, first as trooper them latterly as motor transport driver. He was briefly promoted to Corporal in June 1917.
