Michael McGinnity was born at Walton, Liverpool, England in 1885, and was a clerk. He enlisted on 18 August 1915, giving his father as next of kin, living in Lancashire. He embarked on 17 December 1915 and served with the 15th Battalion.

He was wounded in action on three occasions, 1 February 1917, 18 September and 20th September 1918. He was promoted to Corporal on 25 April 1918.

He was awarded the Military Medal, gazetted 29 August 1918, and Bar, gazetted 24 January 1919.

He returned to Australia on the Karmalaon 2 January 1919.He also served in WWII.
