Roderick McLeod was born at Gladstone, Queensland, where his mother was living when he enlisted. His connection to Manly is not known. He was born in 1887 and was a correspondence clerk.

He enlisted on 20 May 1915 and served with the 5th Field Artillery. He was seconded to the 114th Howitzers. He was promoted to Corporal on 1 April 1916 and Sergeant on 20 May 1916, then to Second Lieutenant on 20 May 1916. He was awarded the Military Cross, gazetted 5 April 1918 for courage under fire. After the war, he trained as an engineer in London before returning to Australia.
