Francis McMahon was born at Milton, NSW and was a clerk. He enlisted on 10 February 1915 aged 27, and gave his parents at 13 James Street, Manly as next of kin.

He embarked on 28 August 1915 and served with the 18th Battalion. He was wounded in the chest at Gallipoli and was treated at hospital in England. He contracted VD and spent January-August 1916 receiving treatment.

He returned to Australia on the Devanhaon 8 May 1919.
