Richard McNab was born at Dalmellington, Ayrshire, Scotland in 1888 and was a grocer. He enlisted on 27 August 1915 and gave as next of kin family living at 45 Smith Street, Manly.

He embarked on the Medic on 7 November 1916. He served with the 4th Battalion. He was wounded in action in August 1916. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 6 August 1917. He was wounded in the face on 16 April 1918, and lost his left eye.

He returned to Australia on the Somerset on 16 January 1919.
