John Meeks was born at Manly in 1896. He was a sawyer and blacksmith’s striker. His family lived at Neutral Bay.

He enlisted on 14 November 1915, and served in France and Belgium. He was transferred to the 4th Battalion on 28 July 1916. He was hospitalised on several occasions with influenza, mumps and trench foot.

His mates called him ‘Wally’. He was killed in action at the Menin Road, Broodseinde, Belgium on 4 October 1917.

His name is not on the Manly War Memorial.
