Robert Miller was born at Auburn, Sydney in 1893. He was an accountant. He enlisted on 30 August 1914, giving his mother at Darley Road, Manly, as next of kin.

He embarked on the Euripides on 20 October 1914. He was with the 1st Field Ambulance at Gallipoli. He was transferred to the 1st Battalion as a Second Lieutenant on 5 August 1916, but was wounded in action on the 22nd August. His left leg was amputated, and he was returned to Australia for discharge on 21 July 1917.

He was later to become Mayor of Manly.
