Eric Milligan was born at Paddington in 1894. He was a motor mechanic, and his mother was living at Oliver Road, Freshwater. He enlisted on 28 March 1916.

He embarked on the Euripides on 9 September 1916 on the Euripides. He served in France with the 17th Battalion from 16 January 1917 onwards. He was hospitalised several times with appendicitis, VD and trench fever.

He was awarded the Military Medal on 22 October 1918, at which time he was briefly an acting Corporal, although the AWM records do not give an indication of when this was gazetted.

He returned to Australia on the Demosthenes on 16 January 1919.
