Jack Mitchell

Jack Mitchell was born in Queensland on 8 March 1890. He became a grazier.

Prior to the war he was a member of North Steyne SLSC. He also swam with Manly Amateur Swimming Club. His photo hung on the club’s photographic Roll of Honour for many years.

He enlisted on 12 November 1914, and embarked on the Seang Bee on 11 February 1915. He obtained a commission, and rose to the rank of Captain with the 55th Battalion. He was Mentioned in Despatches, and was awarded the Military Cross for his actions in 1918. He returned to Australia on 5 April 1919.

His father was William Mitchell, living in Maida Vale, London in 1914. A daughter was born to Captain and Mrs Mitchell on 23 May 1915 at Whitehall Flats, North Steyne, Manly. By that time, he was farming shorthorns at Forbes, NSW.

He died at Neutral Bay on 27 December 1960 [1].
