David Morgan was born at Newbridge, Wales. He was a grocer. He enlisted on 16 May 1915, giving his father in Wales as next of kin. He had previously served with the Gloucester Yeomanry.

He embarked on 10 November 1915, and served with the 8th Field Ambulance. He later transferred to the 4th Divisional Train.

He returned to Australia on 12 May 1919 on the Port Napier.
