Cecil Murray was born at Manly in 1891 and was a carpenter with Arthur Moon of Manly. He enlisted on 17 August 1914, giving his mother at 36 Arthur Street as next of kin.

He embarked on 18 October 1914. He was wounded at Gallipoli. He was wounded again on 20 July 1916 in France. He was promoted to Corporal on 31 May 1916 and Sergeant in April 1918. He was wounded for a third time, in the arm, on 1 October 1918.

He returned to Australia on the Dunluce Castlein April 1919.
