Cecil Newton was born at Barnet, England in 1878 and was an electrician. He enlisted on 5 January 1916, giving as next of kin his father at 74 Wood Street.

He embarked on the Medic on 20 May 1916, and served with the 1st Anzac Wireless Squadron. He was hospitalised with colitis. He was promoted to Lance-Corporal on 31 July 1916 but later reverted to Driver.

He returned to Australia on the Ormondeon 16 June 1919. His brothers Ballantyne and Eric also served.
