Archie Leslie Ogilvy

Archie Ogilvy was the son of Adam Ogilvy, who was Mayor of Manly. Archie was born at Redfern in 1888. He was a marine engineer, and worked at Mort’s Dock for five years prior to WWI.

He enlisted on 19 August 1914. He was gassed in July 1915 and again in August 1917. He was treated for shellshock in August 1916.He stated that he was awarded the DCM on 20 August 1916, and wore the ribbon; but correspondence in his war service record indicated that the award was never gazetted.

He married Bertha Helen Peel at Brightlingsea, Essex, on 23 March 1917.After the war he was an auctioneer and real estate salesman.He stood for Parliament in 1930 for the North Shore electorate, but was unsuccessful.

In 1922 he stood for Manly Council, but was unsuccessful, coming 18th out of 24 candidates, of whom 9 were elected.In April 1923 he saved a young man from drowning at Manly Cargo Wharf [1].

He died in 1968 at Levin Horowhenua War Veterans’ Home, New Zealand.
