Jack Page was born at Paddington in 1896 and was a farm hand and later a motor mechanic.

He enlisted in March 1916, giving his mother at 13 Pittwater Road as next of kin. However after four weeks’ training at Depot, he was discharged as being unlikely to become an efficient soldier, not through any misconduct. However, he enlisted again on 27 April 1917, and was this time accepted into the 7th Light Horse. He served in Egypt, and returned to Australia on the Euripides in March 1919.

Having contracted malaria, he was discharged from service on 1 June 1919.
