Herbert Pym was born at Newtown in 1876, and was a driver. He was stabbed in an assault in Manly in 1899. He enlisted on 14 August 1915, giving his wife Emma, living at Ozone Street, as next of kin.

He served with the 20th Battalion then was transferred to the 56th Battalion. He served in France but was hospitalised with colitis and cardiac problems.

He was returned to Australia on the Beltana on 17 March 1917 for discharge. In January 1928, his home on the south coast was burnt out by bushfire and he lost all his possessions. He died in 1952.
