John Reid was born at Glebe Point in 1886 and was a plumber. He enlisted on 25 February 1915, giving his wife Mary, at Denison Street, Manly, as next of kin; he was discharged a week later at his own request.

He re-enlisted on 7 March 1915 and embarked on 25 June 1915. He was hospitalised with rheumatic fever at Gallipoli. On 5 August 1916 he was wounded in action in France and hospitalised at Bristol. He was disciplined for being absent without leave for sixteen days soon after. In September 1918 he contracted VD, and soon after wards had influenza.

He was returned to Australia on the Karnalawith debility on 14 January 1919.
