Syd Ridington was born in Sydney and was a letter-carrier. Prior to the war he was a well-known demonstration diver. He enlisted on 12 May 1915, aged 25, giving his father at Stuart Street, Manly as next of kin.

He embarked on 28 July 1915, and served with the 17th Battalion. He was promoted to Corporal on 25 December 1915, and subsequently to Lance-Sergeant. He was wounded in action on 20 September 1917. He was hospitalized for a hernia in 1918.

He returned to Australia on the Medic on 10 April 1919.
