George Rowohl was born in Sydney in 1878 and was a clerk in the Public Works Department; his wife Jessie was a teacher at Fort Street School. He enlisted on 18 April 1915, living at Victoria Parade, Manly.

He served in England in the Pay Corps, and was reclassified from Private to 2nd class clerk. He returned to Australia on the Kaiser-i-Hind on 6 May 1919.
