Arthur Rutter was born in 1899 and enlisted while still a student, over his parents’ objections.

He enlisted on 19 April 1917 and embarked on the Beltana on 16 June. He arrived at Plymouth on 25 August 1917. While undergoing training in England, he several times went absent without leave, and for the last offence was sentenced to 50 days in detention. He was then sent to France on 6 May 1918, and was killed in action on 3 August 1918.
