Walter Simms was born at Annandale and was a book-keeper. He enlisted aged 23 on 17 August 1914, giving his father, living at Fairlight Crescent, Manly as next of kin.

He embarked on the Minnewaskaon 5 April 1914 and served with the 1st Battalion at Gallipoli. He was wounded in action in late April 1915 in the foot, and again in early August in the elbow. He was promoted to Corporal on 20 June 1915. He was placed on the supernumerary list and returned to Australia on the Star of Victoria on 19 January 1919.
