James Smith was born at Manchester, England in 1877 and was a sanitary engineer. He enlisted on 17 February 1917, giving his wife Sarah at Belgrave Street, Manly, as next of kin.

He embarked on the Miltiades on 2 August 1917 and served in France with the 10th Field Co Engineers from January 1918 onwards. He returned to Australia on the Medic on 24 August 1918 following a recurrence of an old injury.
