Stanley Smith was born in 1893 at Manly and was a station overseer. He enlisted on 4 September 1914, giving his father, living at Addison Road, Manly, as next of kin.

He embarked on the Lutzow on 15 May 1915 and served at Gallipoli with the 6th Light Horse. He was twice wounded in action, the second time on 8 August 1915 a severe shrapnel wound in the leg. He was treated in hospital at Heliopolis, before returning to Australia on the Ulysses on 4 September 1915 for discharge.
