Jack Steber was born at Manly and attended Sydney Grammar. He was a bank clerk with the Bank of NSW. He enlisted on 20 August 1914, aged 21, and served with the 4th Battalion.

He embarked on 20 October 1914, and served at Gallipoli. He was Mentioned in Despatches for gallantry. He was wounded in the arm and hospitalized with typhoid in May 1915. He was promoted to Sergeant on 30 June 1915 and returned to Australia on the Euripides in August 1915. He was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant on 20 May 1916 and served in France. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 9 may 1917. He was hospitalized with tonsillitis and later with VD.

He returned to Australia on the Freidrichsruhon 23 May 1919. The photo is mis-captioned Stebes.
