Thomas Sterland was born at Leichhardt in 1893 and was a carpenter. He enlisted on 5 November 1914 giving as next of kin his father, living at Rozelle.

He embarked on the Ajana on 18 December 1914 and served at Gallipoli with the 1st Mobile Veterinary Section. He was promoted to Lance-Corporal on 27 November 1916. He transferred to the Australian Flying Corps at Castle Bromwich with the rank of Rigger. He was promoted to Corporal on 1 March 1918 and Corporal Mechanic on 7 June 1918.

He returned to Australia on the Suevic on 20 November 1918. After the war he had a dairy at Brookvale. He died 30 April 1982, aged 89, at Concord Repatriation Hospital.
