Charles Stuart was born at Inverell and was a tailor. He enlisted on 1 April 1915, giving as next of kin his mother, living at Newtown.

He embarked on 25 June 1915 and served with the 5th Field Ambulance. He contracted VD in December 1916. In 1917 he was classified as a Permanent Base man, and was returned to Australia on 31 January 1918 for discharge owing to pes cavus, also known as ‘claw foot’.
