Ambrose Sweeney was born at Manly in 1892. His father was a dairyman, and the family lived at Condamine Street. Ambrose was a plumber to trade prior to enlisting on 16 August 1915.

He arrived at Egypt on 26 February 1916 then at France on 5 April 1916. He served with the 20th Battalion, and was wounded in action on 19 May 1916. He was then wounded on 4 August 1916 and invalided to England.

He died at a hospital in Manchester of shrapnel wounds to the legs on 11 August 1916. It is thought that one of his nurses in hospital was a cousin, Rose-Ann Sweeney, who was later a matron at Hay Hospital.
