Samuel Taylor was born at St Luke’s Middlesex, and was a tram conductor. He enlisted on 20 August 1914, giving as next of kin his wife, living at Waine Street, North Manly.

He embarked on the Euripides on 20 October 1914, and served with the 3rd Battalion at Gallipoli. He was hospitalized with enteric fever and rheumatism. He then served in France and was twice wounded in action, on 8 November 1916 and again on 12 April 1917 in the head. He was returned to Australia on the Bordaon 26 September 1917.

His war service record contains several letters from his wife who had heard he was wounded at Gallipoli. She states: “Our husbands is dearer to us than they are to their country.”
