Roy Thom was born at Summer Hill in 1893 and was a commercial traveller. He enlisted on 5 July 1916, giving as next of kin his father at Cliff Street, Manly.

He embarked on the Ascaniuson 25 October 1916 and served in France with the 117th Howitzer Battery as a Gunner. He returned to Australia on the Port Sydney on 22 September 1919.
