William Tobin was born at Paddington in 1895 and was a carter. He enlisted on 10 August 1915, giving as next of kin his mother, at Francis Street, Manly.

He served in France with the 56th Battalion, and was wounded in action on 30 September 1916. He was hospitalized in England with wounds to his right leg and shellshock. In July 1917 he was returned to Australia due to his wounds and was discharged from service on 14 December 1917.
