John Trott was born at Melbourne and was a locomotive driver. He married in 1892. He enlisted on 3 January 1917 giving his wife living at Margaret Street, Manly, as next of kin.

He gave his age at enlistment as 44 and 11 months; however, his death notice in 1930 gives his age as 72, so he must have been 59 or 60 when he enlisted, making him probably the oldest man from Manly to see service in WWI.

He embarked on the Wiltshire on 7 February 1917 and served with the 1st Railway Section in France. He was returned to England on 23 September 1918 for medical assessment, and was returned to Australia as overage.
